Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the health status, depression, and health behaviors and then relationships among these three variables in the elderly who live in institutions and home.

Methods: The score of health status, depression, and health behaviors were collected from 90 elders in 3 institutions and 79 elders at their home in Daegu city. For the data analysis, SPSS program was utilized for descriptive statistics, ¥ö©÷-test, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation.

Results: 1. The score of health status was significantly higher in the elderly at home than those in institutions. 2. The score of depression was significantly lower in the elderly at home than those in institutions. 3. The score of health behaviors were significantly higher in the elderly at home than those in institutions. 4. In home, the general characteristics which affected the health status scores were gender, spouse, education level, monthly pocket money, perceived health status, and number of present illness. In institutions were gender and perceived health status. 5. In home, the general characteristics which affected the depression scores were gender, education level, perceived health status, and number of present illness. In institutions were gender, perceived health status, and number of present illness. 6. In home, the general characteristics which affected the health behavior scores were only number of present illness. In institutions were only perceived health status. 7. There was a significant negative correlation between health status and depression, positive correlation between health status and health behaviors, and negative correlation between depression and health behaviors.
Conclusion: Based on the results, to promote health behaviors of the elderly, it is necessary to develop nursing intervention that considers residence types and demographic characteristics.
